Since we always go to Powder Mountain and Snowbasin, we decided to stay in Salt Lake City this time and try out some new resorts. The plan was to fly in Friday night, hit The Canyons on Saturday, go to either Solitude or Brighton on Sunday, and then fly back home Sunday night. Saturday turned out to be unseasonably warm – it hit 70F in Salt Lake and was somewhere in the 50s on the mountain. Definitely spring-skiing conditions. The Canyons resort is pretty cool. From the main parking lot, you take a lift to the base of the mountain, going over a bunch of multi-million dollar condos and townhouses. The resort itself is huge! We started out on the right side (looking up the mountain) and actually didn’t even make it to the far left side. Well, you may have noticed that the site felt a bit different when you first arrived. You’ll likely notice a difference when you’re browsing through pics, and you’ll almost definitely notice something different when you’re viewing videos. What the heck am I talking about? I’m talking about SPEED, lots of it! As of today, RohJuh.com is being served from a commercial hosting provider instead of my home Mac. As I’ve complained about at various times in the past, most ISP (internet service providers) cap the upload speeds on home internet connections. Prior to today, RohJuh.com resided on my home Mac. Thus, anything that is requested from the site (text, pics, vids) must be uploaded from my home Mac to the end user, and is thereby restricted by that very limited uplink. Here’s the Best Man’s toast I gave at my brother Ken’s wedding: Well, we’ve been mistaken for twins on more than one occasion so if you don’t know who I am yet and haven’t figured things out from the resemblance, I’m Ken’s older brother Roger. When Ken first asked me if I would be his Best Man, my response was likely not something he had hoped for. My reply was, “Well, I guess so.” Those words just kind of came out of my mouth before I could really think. It was definitely one of those times where you wished you could do a TiVo rewind back in time. Clearly, “I guess so” is not a very good response to being asked to be a Best Man. But it wasn’t that I didn’t want to be his Best Man. It was simply that I just wasn’t expecting it. After all, Ken and I live over 400 miles apart from each other, I hadn’t even seen him for over a year, and we hardly ever spoke on the phone either. It was supposed to be a relatively straightforward affair. Suffice it to say that it took a bit longer than I expected (surprise, surprise!). After encountering several issues, consulting with my personal computer guru, and doing a fair share of Googling, I was finally able to figure things out and get things working. I had saved all my log files since RohJuh’s inception back in 2001, but unfortunately, it wasn’t until December of last year (2005) that I realized my web server had been recording its logs in a less-than-optimal format. I had been recording things in the Apache “common” format which is the default setting in OS X. The common format records rudimentary things like page visits and IP numbers, but that info is not very interesting. The “combined” format is where it’s at. It records ...
