We had already planned on spending the X-mas holidays with Judy’s family in Northern California, so it made sense to prolong our stay there to do a bit of house hunting. TiVo is in Alviso and Judy’s office will be in San Francisco. We thus needed to find a place that was roughly at the midway point between the two cities. Since Judy will likely be able to work from home at least one day a week, we would preferably find a place that was a bit closer to TiVo than to Quintiles. Based on our work locations, we felt that we could live as far south as Palo Alto and as far north as San Mateo. That narrowed things down a bit, but still included Menlo Park, Atherton, Redwood City, Redwood Shores, San Carlos, Belmont, Woodside, and a bunch of others. We still had a lot of areas to consider! Paul (my boss to be) and I had discussed compensation a few days ago and I had some issues with the proposed package. I was very happy to see that the new offer addressed those issues. It took a little while to get the “official” offer letter from TiVo’s HR, but that was understandable because most everyone at TiVo was in the midst of a big, free TiVo giveaway event. Despite being up to their ears with the big event (hundreds of people showed up as did news cameras and helicopters), I did receive the official offer today and indicated my acceptance of it. So it looks like Judy and I are Silicon Valley bound!

Nevertheless, it was a long day and I was pretty tired by the end of it. Paul, my boss-to-be, and I had known each other for some time through my work at Hughes Network Systems on our DirecTiVo (DirecTV with TiVo) line of set-top boxes. My impression was that TiVo was becoming a software only company so I didn’t even consider TiVo as a place of employment after my layoff from HNS. Being a long-time Mac afficionado, I was initially looking to try to get a job at Apple, and had emailed Paul to see if he had any contacts at Apple. Responding to my inquiry about Apple, Paul asked if I had any desire to consider a position at TiVo. I can’t get into any specifics, but suffice it to say that TiVo, at least at the moment, has plans in the hardware arena. There were no real hiccups during the interview. I was asked about my bac...
